Cheltenham Tuesday

As usual the Irish have a very strong hand in the opening Supreme Novices Hurdle and Fiveforthree could be the best of the raiders.

I was told a couple of weeks ago by Ladbrokes' PRO David Williams that the Willie Mullins-trained six-year-old was the Harrow firm's biggest ante-post loser at the whole meeting.

Fiveforthree is also in Wednesday's Ballymore Properties Novices Hurdle and if he misses the Supreme, Eddie Harty's Captain Cee Bee, an impressive winner of both his starts over hurdles, would get the vote.

Paul Nicholls was very keen on the chances of Noland in the Arkle Chase after the gelding won his prep at Sandown a couple of weeks ago and I make the gelding the best bet of the day.

Champion Hurdle favourite Sizing Europe did us a big favour when winning in great style last time but 2-1 is a short enough price and I would rather have a small each-way bet on the Tony McCoys mount Straw Bear at 25-1

The William Hill Trophy is wide open but I will be surprised if Monkerhostin is not involved in the finish. His trainer, Philip Hobbs, says the 11-year-old is no worse than last year when he was fourth to Kauto Star in the Gold Cup.

Stamina will be at a premium in the X-County Chase and Petite Margot stays for ever. The nine-year-old rates an each-way bet.

The improving Harry Tricker looks well weighted in the closing Fred Winter Novices Hurdle and Gary Moore's juvenile is another solid each way investment.

Tuesday bets:

  • 2.00 Fiveforthree (if absent Captain Cee Bee).
  • 2.35 Noland NAP
  • 3.15 Straw Bear each-way
  • 4.00 Monkerhostin each-way
  • 4.40 Petite Margot each-way
  • 5.20 Harry Tricker each-way

Cheltenham Wednesday

Most of the leading contenders for the Ballymore Properties Novices Hurdle hold alternative entries but it is the sole engagement at the meeting for Group Captain. Alan King's six-year-old has won all three starts over hurdles and the former smart Flat handicapper should give a good account.

Because he has won a couple of minor events at Wincanton, Starzaan has rather gone under the radar as far as the Royal & SunAlliance Chase is concerned. However, I was seriously impressed with the way he thrashed the useful Duc de Reginere last time and his trainer, Hughie Morrison, knows all about winning at the Festival.

Last year's unlucky Arkle Chase second Fair Along could be the surprise packet in the Champion Chase. He is reported in grand shape by connections and is each-way value at 8-1 and bigger.

Festival specialist Ferdy Murphy is due to run the unexposed Naiad Du Misselot in the Coral Cup and the early booking of jockey Davy Russell suggests the Yorkshire trainer means business.

The shrewd Victor Dartnall has a dark one for the Peter O'Sullevan Chase in Double Intruder who looks like he will improve markedly for this first crack at four miles.

The closing Champion Bumper is red hot. However, it will be disappointing if Cousin Vinny does not go close. Willie Mullins' five-year-old overcame several problems in running to make an impressive winning debut at Punchestown last month.

Wednesday bets:

  • 2.00 Group Captain
  • 2.35 Starzaan NAP
  • 3.15 Fair Along each-way
  • 4.00 Naiad Du Misselot each-way
  • 4.40 Double Inruder each-way
  • 5.00 Cousin Vinny each-way

Cheltenham Thursday

Paul Nicholls has entered the classy quartet of Big Bucks, Silverburn, Arturio and Dear Villez in ther Jewson Novices Handicap Chase and whatever the champion trainer saddles deserves the utmost respect. However, I am going nto suggest an each-way alternative in the Venetia Williams-trained Something Wells. He has won two of his three starts over fences in fine style and is nicely handicapped.

The very powerful David Pipe stable believe that Our Vic in the Ryanair Chase is their best chance of a winner at the meeting. The gelding had to give weight away when second to Taranis in last year's race but the conditions have been changed and all the runners have the same weight to carry this time.

Normally the Howard Johnson-trained Inglis Drever would be banker material to win a third Ladbrokes World Hurdle but his stable have been under a cloud lately. I am not going to oppose him as he is undoubtedly the best horse in the race but I am going to advise caution and not to go in head down.

Andy Turnell has his team in good form and the Wiltshire trainer's Bible Lord could prove the answer to the Racing Post Plate. The chestnut won nicely at Exeter last time and he has plenty of potential for improvement. I suggest backing Oedipe as well. He was very impressive when winning at Kempton on his only start in this country 15 months ago and his trainer Nicky Henderson is adept at having a horse ready after a long layoff. A small reverse forecast could pay a good dividend.

Jamie Snowden is just about the best amateur around and his booking for Bob Bob Bobbin in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Chase really takes the eye. The grey has shown very good form in the past and he has had a wind operation since a couple of disappointing runs at the end of last year.

Another possibly significant booking is that of Robert Thornton for Russian Trigger in the Pertemps Handicap Hurdle Final. Victor Dartnall's six-year-old has won the last three of his four starts and the way he has been staying suggests he will relish the step up in trip he faces here.

Thursday bets

  • 2.00 Something Wells each-way
  • 2.35 Our Vic NAP
  • 3.15 Inglis Drever
  • 4.00 Bible Lord plus save on Oedipe and combine in reverse forecast
  • 4.40 Bob Bob Bobbin each-way
  • 5.20 Russian Trigger each-way

Cheltenham Friday

Franchoek is a solid favourite at around 9-4 for the Triumph Hurdle and I wouldn't put anyone off backing him but the value could be in supporting Serabad at 16-1 each-way. Peter Bowen's charge has finished behind Franchoek twice but he wasn't beaten far either time and he has the scope to improve enough to be even closer this time.

I have already tipped a couple of Victor Dartnall's horses for earlier races at the meeting and I think the Devon trainer has another good prospect in Lodge Lane in the Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle. The gelding has won both his starts over timber and Dartnall believes he is potentially the best horse he has ever had. The Sir Alex Fergusson-owned What A Friend, who looks sure to improve for this stiffer test of stamina, is worth an each-way saver and backing in a reverse forecast with Lodge Lane.

Whether you have a bet or not the Tote Gold Cup in not a race to miss with the mouth-watering clash between Kauto Star and Denman. I just favour Kauto Star as his form is the stronger but I am sure we have yet to see the best of the massive Denman.

The Foxhunter looks another one for the Irish with the highly regarded Agus A Vic, who beat the useful Climate Control in good style at Leopardstown last month, likely to prove very hard to beat.

The Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase is a tricky race to weigh up but the Nicky Henderson-trained mare My Petra may have got in lightly and her trainer is obviously very keen to win the race named in honour of his late father.

Henderson could be the man to follow in the David Nicholson Mares Hurdle with the tough and talented Chomba Womba.

The Vincent O'Brien County Hurdle is a fiendishly difficult getting out stakes but Tony Martin is always a good man to have on your side and the Irish trainer's Psycho could be lurking on a favourable mark at the foot of the handicap.

Friday bets

  • 2.00 Serabad each-way
  • 2.35 Lodge Lane plus each-way What A friend and combine in reverse forecast.
  • 3.15 Kauto Star
  • 4.00 Agus A Vic NAP
  • 4.35 My Petra each-way
  • 5.10 Chomba Womba
  • 5.45 Psycho
